How to Layer Skincare Products in the Correct Order

ترتيب استخدام الغسول والتونر والسيروم والمرطب

Cleanser, toner, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen…

Which one comes first?

Using great skincare products is only part of building an effective routine. Knowing how to layer skincare products in the correct order can make your routine easier to follow and help you use each formula as intended.

The good news? Skincare layering doesn’t need to be complicated.

Here’s the correct order and how to adapt it to your routine.

The Basic Skincare Layering Rule

A helpful general rule is:

Apply products from the lightest texture to the heaviest texture.

Watery products generally come first, followed by more concentrated serums and treatments, then creams and oils.

During the daytime, sunscreen comes last.

However, individual product instructions should always take priority because certain active ingredients or treatments may require a specific application method.

Correct Skincare Order: Morning

A complete morning routine may follow this order:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Essence
  4. Serum
  5. Eye cream
  6. Moisturizer
  7. Sunscreen

You don’t need every step.

A simple morning routine can consist of just:

Cleanser → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

Additional products should have a reason for being in your routine.

Step 1: Cleanser

Cleansing prepares your skin for everything that follows.

In the morning, a gentle water-based cleanser may be enough for many people.

Choose a cleanser appropriate for your skin type and avoid leaving your skin feeling excessively dry or stripped.

Step 2: Toner

Toner comes directly after cleansing.

Modern hydrating toners can contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica, heartleaf, or niacinamide.

Because toners generally have a lightweight consistency, they are applied before thicker serums and creams.

Step 3: Essence

If you use an essence, apply it after toner and before serum.

Essences are often lightweight and can provide additional hydration or targeted skincare ingredients.

They’re particularly common in Korean skincare routines but aren’t mandatory.

Step 4: Serum

Next comes your serum.

Serums are typically designed to deliver targeted ingredients for concerns such as hydration, uneven-looking tone, texture, or signs of aging.

Common serum ingredients include:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Niacinamide
  • Vitamin C
  • Peptides
  • Centella asiatica
  • Retinoids

Be careful when combining multiple active ingredients. Not every serum needs to be used during the same routine.

Step 5: Eye Cream

If you use an eye cream, it can generally be applied after your serum and before or around the moisturizer step, depending on the product’s directions and texture.

Use a small amount and apply gently around the eye area.

Step 6: Moisturizer

Moisturizer helps maintain hydration and supports the skin barrier.

This is why it generally comes toward the end of your routine.

Choose the texture according to your skin type:

Dry skin: Creamier formulas

Oily skin: Lightweight gels or lotions

Combination skin: Balanced lightweight moisturizer

Sensitive skin: Simple, soothing, barrier-supporting formulas

Step 7: Sunscreen

During the day, sunscreen should be your final skincare step.

Apply an appropriate amount according to the product instructions and remember to reapply when necessary.

If you’re applying makeup, sunscreen generally comes before makeup.

Correct Skincare Order: Night

Your evening routine may look slightly different:

  1. Oil cleanser or makeup remover
  2. Water-based cleanser
  3. Toner
  4. Essence
  5. Treatment or serum
  6. Eye cream
  7. Moisturizer

You may not need to double cleanse every night. It is particularly useful when removing makeup, sunscreen, or other products that aren’t easily removed with a water-based cleanser alone.

Where Do Exfoliants Go?

This depends on the type of exfoliant.

AHA and BHA products come in several formats, including cleansers, toners, liquids, serums, and masks.

Because formulas vary, follow the instructions for your specific exfoliating product rather than assuming every exfoliant belongs at the same stage.

Most importantly, avoid excessive exfoliation.

Where Does Retinol Go?

Retinol and other retinoid skincare products are generally used during an evening routine, but application instructions can differ by formula.

If you’re new to retinol, introduce it gradually rather than immediately using it every night.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and pay attention to how your skin responds.

Can You Use Multiple Serums Together?

Sometimes, but you don’t need to.

Layering several serums may unnecessarily complicate your routine, particularly when they contain strong active ingredients.

Instead, choose products based on your main skincare goals.

For example, someone primarily concerned with dehydration may prioritize a hydrating serum, while someone concerned with uneven-looking tone may choose a brightening formula.

How Long Should You Wait Between Layers?

You usually don’t need to wait several minutes between every skincare product.

Allow one product to settle comfortably before moving to the next.

The exception is when a particular product provides specific instructions about timing or application.

Skincare Layering Mistakes to Avoid

Even an expensive routine can become unnecessarily complicated.

Try to avoid:

  • Applying too many active ingredients at once
  • Exfoliating too frequently
  • Using products simply because they’re trending
  • Skipping moisturizer on oily skin
  • Applying sunscreen too early in the routine
  • Introducing several new products simultaneously
  • Ignoring product-specific directions

A shorter, consistent routine can often be easier to maintain than an unnecessarily complicated one.

The Easy Way to Remember Your Skincare Order

If you forget everything else, remember:

Cleanse → Hydrate → Treat → Moisturize → Protect

And generally:

Thin textures → thicker textures → sunscreen during the day.

Once you understand that structure, building your skincare routine becomes much easier.
